How to use this Most taxis in Makkah are negotiated, not metered. Work out the estimate here first, then open with a number near the low end and settle somewhere in the middle. Walking away is always an option — there is another taxi thirty seconds behind.

⚙️ Adjust the rates used

Fares drift over time and vary by vehicle. If you find the estimates consistently off, tune them here — your changes are saved on this device. The per-km rate tapers automatically over longer distances, so a long intercity run isn't priced at the city rate.

🤝 Negotiating, honestly

  • Agree the price before you get in. Not after loading the bags, not at the junction. Before.
  • Say the total, for everyone, to the final door. "Hundred riyal, all of us, to the hotel door" — in that form. Vague agreements become per-person agreements on arrival.
  • Check the ride app first even if you then take a street taxi. The app price tells you the real market rate for that moment, which is the single most useful piece of information in the negotiation.
  • Carry small notes. "No change" is the oldest move there is.
  • Share with other pilgrims. At the airport and outside the Haram, groups going the same way split a car constantly. Just ask.
  • Expect surge after prayers. The twenty minutes after a congregational prayer is the worst time to need a taxi anywhere near the Haram. Walk five minutes out and the price drops.
  • Airport arrivals: ignore the drivers who approach you inside the terminal. Walk out to the official rank or open a ride app.

📱 Ride apps

Uber

Widely used in Makkah and Jeddah. Price shown upfront, pay by card or cash.

Careem

The regional app; often has more cars near the Haram and sometimes cheaper on short hops.

Around the Haram, GPS struggles among the towers and drivers often can't reach the pickup pin. Agree a landmark — a named hotel entrance or a specific gate — rather than trusting the map pin.

These are estimates, not quoted prices. This site is not a taxi operator and cannot book or guarantee anything. Actual fares depend on the driver, the vehicle, traffic, the season and your negotiation. Distances are approximate road distances. Always confirm the price before travelling.
