The one thing to understand first You will walk to the Haram five times a day, often in heat, often tired. A 3-star hotel eight minutes from a gate will give you a better Umrah than a 5-star hotel forty minutes away. Judge distance first, stars second.

Walking times are for an unhurried adult and assume normal crowds. Add a good 10–20 minutes around the five prayers, when the walkways and gates are congested — and considerably more on a Friday.

Indicative planning ranges per room per night, not quotes. Makkah pricing swings harder than almost any other city on earth — the same room can be four to six times dearer in the last ten nights of Ramadan. Always check live prices for your dates.

🔍 Check these before you book

  • Walking distance, not straight-line distance. Booking sites measure as the crow flies. The real walk can be twice that, because you go around the complex, not through it. Check it on the map before you trust the number.
  • Which gate you'd actually use. "500m from the Haram" means little if your nearest entrance is on the far side from your room.
  • "Haram view" costs real money. It is a genuine premium, often several hundred riyal a night. Decide honestly whether you will be in the room looking out of the window, or in the mosque.
  • Shuttle schedule, if you're further out. Ask how often it runs, whether it runs through the night, and whether it still runs during Ramadan. A shuttle every two hours is not a shuttle.
  • Is breakfast included, and when does it start? Many kitchens open after Fajr, which is no use if you want to eat and return for Ishraq.
  • Check-in and check-out times against your flight. Night arrivals are the norm for Umrah; confirm the room is held and that reception is staffed around the clock.
  • Lift capacity in a tall hotel. In a 25-floor hotel at prayer time, a slow lift adds fifteen minutes to every trip. Reviews mention this when it's bad.
  • Read reviews written during Ramadan. A hotel that runs well in a quiet month can be overwhelmed in a busy one.
  • Cancellation terms. Visa and flight plans change. Free cancellation is usually worth a small premium.

💰 Spending less

Stay further out and use the bus

Aziziyah and Shisha cost a fraction of the tower hotels and are well connected by bus and shared taxi. If your trip is long, the saving over ten nights can be larger than your airfare. The trade-off is real though: you will make fewer trips to the Haram per day, and that is the thing you came for. Consider it for a longer stay, not a three-night one.

Split your stay

A common tactic: two or three nights close to the Haram at the start, while your energy and enthusiasm are highest, then move further out for the rest. You get the intense early days near the mosque without paying tower prices for the whole trip.

Apartments for families

For five or more people, a serviced apartment usually beats two hotel rooms on price and is far more comfortable. A kitchen also cuts the food bill substantially, which adds up over a week.

Avoid the peaks if you possibly can

The last ten nights of Ramadan and the Hajj period are the two most expensive windows in the year, by a wide margin. The weeks immediately after Hajj, and the months between Ramadan and Hajj season, are the cheapest — often less than a third of peak rates for the same room.

Book refundable, then watch the price

Makkah rates move a great deal as dates approach. Book something refundable early so you have a room secured, then check again periodically — if it drops, rebook and cancel the first. Just diarise the cancellation deadline.

🕌 Madinah, briefly

Madinah is easier and generally cheaper. The area around the Prophet's Mosque is flatter, more compact and far more walkable than Makkah, so a wider spread of hotels sits within a genuine 5–10 minute walk.

The central area is ringed by hotels on all sides. Picking one near the gate closest to the Rawdah entrance saves time if you have a permit slot.
